In this 60-minute session, we will get to know each other and decide if we are a good fit to work together. We will meet via telehealth. I will want to talk about confidentiality and some (potentially boring) things about my training and supervision. Maybe we will deal with some technical issues and billing stuff. Finally, I'll ask you, "So, what brings you here today?" Then you take it from there.
This is also a really good time to ask questions.
Sessions typically run about an hour, but they can be as short as 30-45 minutes. I like the full hour because it can be hard to dive into difficult topics knowing I'm about to interrupt your thought process with a reminder that we're out of time. Or like, maybe you need to ugly cry for half of our session. Or maybe you've just realized that you're awesome at avoidance and we need to spend half the session working up to the real meat of the conversation (that's ok, we can work on that). Whichever length you choose, next sessions can help build the counseling relationship and give us a chance to explore your thoughts.
Some people have one goal, and when they reach that goal, they choose to end counseling. Others like to pop in for a quick session from time to time, with no timeline in mind. Others will choose to stay in counseling for years and continue growing. However you want to continue your mental health journey is up to you.
Whenever we come to the end of our journey, you may choose to receive a letter summarizing our work together. This is a common practice in a style of therapy called 'narrative therapy' and can be a good way to reflect on sessions.
